Warangal was the captial of the Kakatiya Dynasty which ruled areas from Telangana, Andhra. Some of the famouns rulers were Ganapathideva, Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra. Rudrama Devi was one of the few women rulers in the Indian History and she ruled for around 25-30 years. The rule of Kakatiyas ended after Prataparudra.
Ramappa temple were built during the rule of Kakatiyas and was destroyed in the wars. The temple is enclosed by a compound wall which is around 4-5 feet wide. There are three temples / halls in the compound. One has been restored to certain extent and the residing god here is Shiva. The name by which Shiva is known here is Ramalingeswara. The Linga is around 7-8 feet high. The temple has been destroyed to certain extent due to the fallen top stone slabs. There is another partially destroyed temple and one hall without a top where the Nandi (Bull, vehicle of Shiva) is located. There is small enclosure with a stone tablet created around time of construction of the temple with writingss in earlier telugu script.
There are three openings for the temple.Figurines in dancing poses were carved on either side of the openings.
There are four carved pillars in the main temple. The carvings range from dancing figures to animals etc. Simiarly carvings are there on the roof also but could not get the same due to low lighting.
Some of the other great carvings are as follows
There is a big lake nearby called Ramappa Lake with resorts of Tourism department on its shores. Boating facilities are available. One can stay in the cottages. But one needs to order food from the canteen before hand or make their arrangements as Palampet is a very small hamlet with practically no facilities. The other tourist locations around are water falls around 90 kms away, Laknavaram reserve forest resorts and Medaram which is famous for the Sammakka Sarakka festival which attracts people from all over Telangana.
